American Beer Day

Beer-
Noun:
An alcoholic beverage made by brewing and fermentation from cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops and the like fora slightly bitter taste.
Beer

For many of us the first, *Cough *Cough, underage drink we had was a sip of beer. Going to that one house party in high school, having to pay $2 to drink cheap, watered down brewskis, was the ‘IT’ thing.
As the average barley pop lover gets older, they move away from the watered down cheap beer, and learn to appreciate the craft of wheat processing. Especially growing up in San Diego, brew is a huge part of this cities’ society. With so many local breweries, it’s ok to have, let’s say, a spoiled palate for beer. The list for San Diego Breweries is pretty extravagant, so I have taken the liberty of listing our top successors:

Like with any alcoholic beverage, it takes time to acquire a taste for beer. There are many types of beer that you can choose from such as: Ales, Lagars, Stouts & Porters, and Malts. As for beer styles there are: Amber, Blonde, Brown, Cream, Dark, Fruit, Golden, Honey, India Pale Ale, Light, Lime, Pale, Pilsner, Red, Strong, and Wheat. Having a hard time choosing what type of brewski to have, or are totally new to the beer tasting scene? Here’s a chart to kind of help with your decision making:beer-is-always-the-right-answer_50290b1a296de

Another tip to beer drinking (especially while tasting variations), always ask for a glass of water. That way, when tasting between different styles and types, your taste buds are fresh and ready to try the new malt.

As with wine, there are ways to pour your hops; you don’t want too much foam, and you don’t want all the taste to fall to the bottom. This surely takes away from the steady art of craft beer. Here’s a simple inforgraphic as to how you should be pouring your hops, specifically from a tap, but the process still works the same when pouring from a bottle to a glass.

Who Loves Caramel? We Sure Do!

Who would have thought that October was also National Caramel Month? Well luckily we have just the right treats for the delicious caramel indulgence!

But first, let’s take a step back into time and see how caramel came to it’s so many variations of use…

The word caramel was first recorded in the English language in 1725; it comes from the Spanish caramelo. The original Spanish word did not refer to the chewy caramel candy we know today, but more likely, to caramelized sugar. The source of caramelo is unknown, but some scholars believe it is related to the late Latin calamellus, a diminutive form of calamus, reed or cane—an implied reference to sugar cane.

In the 1960’s Americans were boiling water and sugar in deep kettles to get a hard candy. Eventually some milk and other raw materials were added to make the chewy caramel that we all know today. There are some disputes about Americans not really knowing the “true” caramel but there are still plenty of treats today that are made in the “traditional” Artisan way.12100_salted_caramel_frosting_3000

In case you didn’t know, all of our pastries and desserts are made by scratch, which includes our caramel. I’m not going to give away the exact process of our caramel making (we still would like to keep a little bit of mystery), BUT we will share with you the ingredients used in the process:

  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Cream
  • Glucose Syrup
  • Butter
  • SaltScreen Shot 2015-10-22 at 11.42.28 AM

October is for Pink Ribbons and Tatas!

As stated in the previous blog post, October is full of national holidays. But most importantly, October has been THE month for Breast Cancer Awareness, an abnormal disease that can occur in any woman’s life.

The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2015 are:

Breast Cancer has been increasing up to 20% worldwide since 2008, being the second leading cause of death in woman, standing behind Lung Cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbons

I’m sure we have all had someone we know that has either won, lost, or are still battling the fight to Breast Cancer. With forgoing fundraisers for research towards this disease, and new technologies, we have been lucky enough to detect early signs of malignant tumors. Unfortunately the removal of these tumors isn’t always a solution for they can always come back.

In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month we wanted to do our part to fighting this disease. All month long with any purchase of a Ludi’s Macaron, Raspberry Macaron, or a Bavarois, a percentage of proceeds will go to support the funding in fighting Breast Cancerfacebook_banner_2015

Please help us support woman fighting Breast Cancer all around the world by buying a dessert pastry to fight your sweet tooth craving!

Make-Your-Own-Pumpkin-Pie-Spice

But, let’s take a step back and see where this Pumpkin Spice craze started. It is said that the first reference to Pumpkin Spice was in “American Cookery” by Amelia Simmons, in 1794. With this, as urbanization started to grow and develop with the Industrial Revolution, there was a need to keep connection with agrarian lifestyle, which is how pumpkin, and more specifically pumpkin spice became an essential  American tradition.diy-pumpkin-pie-spice

With that being said, everyone can use a little more SPICE in their life! Feel free to come in and indulge in Pumpkin Spice Macarons and a Pumpkin Spice Latte!

“Spice up your life” with us this Fall Season!

Merci!
